Light Board Countertop

Description of the Device

Lighted boards and countertops are designed for individuals with low vision. Some individuals with limited sight cannot perceive objects unless there is high contrast or extreme bright light. This allows an individual to perceive objects by the shadow that the object makes due to being lit from beneath. If using solid dishware it makes the outlines of dishes and place settings easier to see.

Temporary or permanent

Permanent renovation to kitchen.

This countertop is a Corian glacier material that is lit underneath with LED light strips.

Cost

Mechanisms can vary in cost depending on materials and size.. Any permanent renovation could be a significant investment but can increase independence. For questions on making a light board for your home contact Jon Turnquist at St. Ambrose Occupational Therapy.

Our light panel uses a low voltage transformer that has been plugged into the wall receptacle controlled by the corresponding light switch. It uses these 12 volt LED light strips to illuminate the surface. This concept can be replicated with almost any material that light will shine brightly though. Make sure to use LED or other low heat emitting lights to reduce risk for burn or fire hazard.
