Environmental Controls

Description of the Device

Environmental Control Units or ECUs are high technology items that allow users to control their home environment with alternative methods such as head, cheek, hand, foot, or even sip and puff switches. Commercial options for purchasing are available but can be expensive. DIY environmental control units or smart home products can be less expensive and user friendly.

If users have control of their voice, the Amazon Echo can also be a home control option. Click HERE to learn more about what the Echo can do in the home

Use of the device

If you or a loved one have decreased mobility or trouble interacting with traditional environments there are many options to increase independence. TVs, radios, fans, lights, and even telephones can be controlled with an ECU system. ECUs are extremely empowering devices and can be customized to the ability of any individual.

 Temporary or Permanent Equipment Considerations

These devices are permanent as long as the user can use them, but do not require major renovations to the home. If phone access is required, a phone jack may need to be installed, otherwise renovations and space requirements are minimal.

 Cost

Commercial Environmental control systems can cost thousands of dollars. St. Ambrose University Occupational Therapy makes a more cost effective version with just as many capabilities for a fraction of the cost. See the information below to contact SAU’s lending library about having one installed in your home.

Support Needs (caregiver)

A caregiver may need to help with setup and maintenance for the device but once set up is complete individual should be able to control desired home electronic devices.

Contraindications for device use

Ensure user has cognitive skills suitable to control various devices. Always ask your OT, physician and care team before purchasing equipment to ensure it is the right choice based on you or your loved ones individual needs.
