Width
The width of a door should be wide enough to accommodate the width of the wheelchair without hitting the user’s fingers.
Standard wheelchairs range from 24-28 inches in overall width but if they are manually propelled you may need additional width for hands and fingers.
34” in width is recommended for people using an electric/power wheelchair. ***Be aware of added width from communication devices cup holders etc that may protrude further into the door space.
Bariatric wheelchairs might require an even wider space.
fold-back hinges can increase the door width by 2” click HERE for more information on fold back hinges
Design Tips and Options
Remove the door and hinges from your bedroom to provide a little more space in the doorway.
Line up the doorway of each room with the doorway of the room across the hallway.
**If you are installing a ceiling track for an electric lift, or ever plan to, this design consideration is critical.
Have a contractor or skilled carpenter widen the existing doorway or install a a pocket door.
